Is it safe to buy a used iPhone? What to check

The checks that matter before you buy: blacklist, Activation Lock, battery and parts.

Guide

Yes, if the phone has been checked properly. Before you buy a used iPhone, make sure it isn’t blacklisted, that Activation Lock is off, and that the battery and parts are what the seller says. Every used phone Ezone Repairs sells is IMEI and blacklist checked, data-wiped, battery-tested, fully tested and graded.

1. Check the IMEI isn’t blacklisted

A blacklisted phone has been reported lost, stolen or unpaid, and UK networks can block it. Find the IMEI in Settings > General > About, or dial *#06#, and check it before you pay.

2. Make sure Activation Lock is off

If the last owner is still signed in to Find My, you won’t be able to set the phone up. The phone should show the Hello setup screen, with no request for someone else’s Apple ID.

3. Check the battery

Look in Settings > Battery > Battery Health (or Battery Health & Charging). See what battery health means.

4. Check the parts history

On recent iPhones and iOS versions, Settings > General > About shows Parts and Service History, which lists parts that have been replaced.

5. Test the basics

Calls, cameras, speakers, charging, buttons, Face ID or Touch ID, Wi-Fi and mobile data.
