If your PS5 or Xbox powers on but there’s no picture, start with the HDMI cable, the TV input and the console’s video settings. If none of those help, the console’s HDMI port or the chip behind it is often damaged, which needs a repair. Ezone Repairs in Nuneaton checks consoles and quotes before any work starts.
Try these first
- Check the TV input. Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input the console is plugged into.
- Try another HDMI cable, and another HDMI socket on the TV.
- Try another TV or monitor if you have one.
- Restart the console fully: switch it off, unplug it from the wall for a minute, then turn it on again.
Reset the video output
- PS5: with the console off, hold the power button until you hear a second beep. It starts in Safe Mode. Connect the controller with a USB cable, press the PS button and choose Change Video Output.
- Xbox: check Xbox Support for your model’s steps to start the console in low-resolution mode.
When it needs a repair
- The HDMI port looks bent, loose or has pins missing.
- The cable only works when it’s held at an angle.
- There’s still no picture on any TV, with any cable.
These usually mean the HDMI port, or the chip behind it on the board, is damaged. See PlayStation, Xbox and Switch repair and console board repair.
