To remove iCloud from an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then tap Sign Out and enter your Apple ID password. That turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Then erase the phone in Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. A phone still linked to your Apple ID can’t be set up by anyone else.
Step by step
- Back up first. See how to back up before a repair: the same steps work before selling.
- Unpair your Apple Watch, if you have one, in the Watch app.
- Sign out of iCloud: Settings > [your name] > Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password when asked.
- Erase the iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Take out your SIM card.
When it’s done, the phone restarts to the Hello screen.
Already sold or reset it without signing out?
Sign in at icloud.com/find on another device, choose the iPhone and select Remove This Device. Also check Devices in your Apple account settings and remove it from the list.
